Hampton Court Palace is a royal palace in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Greater London, in the historic county of Middlesex, and within the postal town East Molesey, Surrey. It has not been inhabited by the British Royal Family since the 18th century. The palace is 11.7 miles (18.8 kilometres) south west of Charing Cross and upstream of central London on the River Thames. Redevelopment began to be carried out in 1515 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, a favourite of King Henry VIII. In 1529, as Wolsey fell from favour, the King seized the palace for himself and later enlarged it. The house has not had a royal british family living in it since the 18th century. In the following century the palace was expanded and renovated. The palace is an interesting mix of both Tudor and Baroque of two architectural styles. Today is a popular tourist attraction and is cared for by an independent charity. Hampton Court, in Surrey and now in Greater London, is one of the most famous royal palaces. It was built by Cardinal Wolsey c1514 but when he realised that his influence with King Henry VIII was waning, he handed it over to the king, who enlarged and improved it. Over the following centuries much more work was done on the palace by various monarchs.
