One of the most spectacular natural wonders on the planet is located in the Gobi Desert, near China's border with Mongolia. The so-called "Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park / Pink Clouds" declared "World Heritage", is a pictorial work of nature in which an important extension of mountains show different colors as if a brush had been used. They are landscapes developed in continental red terrigenous sedimentary layers influenced by endogenous forces (such as elevation) and exogenous forces (such as wear and erosion).

The Danxia landform (Chinese: 丹霞地貌; pinyin: dānxiá dìmào) refers to various landscapes found in southeast and southwest China that "consist of a red bed characterized by steep cliffs". It is a unique type of petrographic geomorphology found in China. Danxia landform is formed from red-coloured sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age. The landforms look very much like karst topography that forms in areas underlain by limestones, but since the rocks that form danxia are sandstones and conglomerates, they have been called "pseudo-karst" landforms.

Known for its colorful rock formations, Zhangye Danxia has unusual colours of the rocks, which are smooth, sharp and in layers. They are the result of deposits of sandstone and other minerals that occurred over 24 million years. Gansu province, China
