Golubac Fortress (Serbian: Golubački grad) is a medieval fortification located on the southern bank of the Danube River, 4 km downstream from the town of Golubac, Serbia. The fortress, probably built in the 14th century, is divided into three parts that were erected in several stages. It has ten towers, most of them square in plan and some of them with reinforcements on their walls to withstand the power of weapons of fire. Golubac Fortress has had a tumultuous history. Before its construction, the site was a Roman settlement and in the Middle Ages it was the scene of various battles, especially between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. The place changed hands numerous times between Turks, Serbs, Bulgarians, Hungarians and Austrians until 1867, when it was handed over to the Serbian Kniaz Michael III Obrenović. Today the fortress is a very popular tourist attraction in the region and one of the most visited places on the Danube boat routes. Golubac, a town in the Braničevo district located in northeastern Serbia very close to the Romanian border, marks the entrance to the Iron Gates (Đerdap in Serbian) national park. The fortification is strategically located on the south bank of the Danube River, where it narrows as it passes through the gorge called Puertas de Hierro and facilitated the control of river traffic and the collection of taxes, something that was done in the Middle Ages thanks to to a great chain that linked the fortress with Babakaj, a rock on the opposite shore.
