The National War Memorial is a granite memorial arch with bronze sculptures in Ottawa, Ontario, and first dedicated in 1939. First built to commemorate the Canadians who died in the First World War, it has progessively been rededicated to include those killed in the Second World War, Korean War, the Second Boer War, the War in Afghanistan, as well as all Canadians killed in all conflicts past and future. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added in front of the memorial and symbolizes the sacrifices made by all Canadians who have died or may yet die for their country. On 22 October 2014, a gunman, armed with a rifle, shot at the sentries on duty at the tomb, fatally wounding one, Corporal Nathan Cirillo of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada.
